Trip to Los Osos

Pod's maiden voyage!

Friday, March 19, Heather and I drove down to Campbell meet up with Larry Edson (who I had met on the type2 mailing list) and his wife Mary. We started out with a nice breakfast at Hobee's. After breakfast, we popped over to a military surplus store to pick up some last minute camping supplies. I scored a cool German field light. Perfect for a VW camper!

The trip down to Los Osos started out a little scary ... I had a nasty smell of gas after filling the tank. I suspected a torn vent line coupler. I had to be very conservative about filling up for the remainder of the trip to avoid the issue.

Once beyond that problem, we had a pleasant drive down to Los Osos. Larry's '71 Adventurewagon high-roof led the way for the first half, and we traded spots after a grocery/lunch break.

Despite leaving about 2 hours later than we'd planned, we got to Los Osos and Go Westy! in plenty of time to do some shopping. What an operation! Lots of Vanagons there, including a cool Syncro Adventurewagon! I picked up some new footman's loops for Pod's luggage rack, as well as an order for Richard Atwell.

From there, we proceeded to San Simeon State Park. We landed a couple of adjacent spots and set up camp. Aaaah, beer and a camp fire. Lots of Bus and Karmann Ghia talk, of course.

The next day, Heather and I headed up to see Hearst San Simeon. Quite a place. Larry and Mary had already been there, so they headed into the town of Cambria. Afterward, we met back up at camp and shared a pot of chili that Mary made for the trip. Next time we need to bring a pot of Heather's split pea soup :-)

Drove back along CA-1. The new tires handled great even on the really curvy bits.

All in all a really fun trip. Can't wait to do another one!
